"Mutant has been enraged by the death of his brother!"

Not to be confused with the town NPC version of Mutant.

Mutant is a post-Moon Lord boss. It is the final boss of Fargo's Souls Mod and the most difficult boss the player must face.

See below for the Mutant Presence debuff inflicted by Mutant.

Summoning

Mutant does not spawn on its own and must be summoned by the player by dropping an Abominationn Voodoo Doll into lava while both Mutant and Abominationn are alive. The Mutant NPC will transform into the boss.

Alternatively, the player can directly initiate the Mutant battle without the need of the Abominationn by using a Mutant's Curse.

Attacks and Behavior

Mutant attacks the player with moves reminiscent of other Eternity Mode boss changes as well as boss weapons and weapons crafted from Eternal Energy.

Expert Mode

Upon reaching 50% of its maximum health in Expert Mode, Mutant will clear all projectiles and create a large Mutant Seal as it enters its second phase, signified by a brief animation where Mutant's eye glows brightly as it absorbs a large number of glowing particles into itself and becomes wreathed in a blazing aura for the rest of the fight.

In its second stage, all nearby players are afflicted with the Mutant Presence debuff and players outside the seal are dragged back in.

  • Mutant Presence disables dodge effects such as from Holy Protection and the Black Belt, reduces the player's defense and damage reduction by half, drastically reduces the player's life regeneration, and disables lifesteal and almost all effect toggles. Which effect toggles are disabled can be seen on the Mutant Presence page.

Eternity Mode

All of Mutant's attacks inflict Mutant Fang, and Mutant fully recovers its life while entering its second stage. Some of its attacks are upgraded. In Phase 2, Mutant's moveset is drastically improved, containing many more attacks.

Mutant additionally gains a third stage at 1 health.

Masochist Mode

  • Mutant's eye glows brightly in Phase 2.
  • Heals 5% of his maximum HP on direct hits with The Penetrator.
  • Most attacks have their telegraphs removed and are made much harder.
  • All Penetrator throws or dashes now leave perpendicular trails of exploding Phantasmal Spheres.
  • Attack pattern in Phase 1 is now random, and can no longer be skipped by dying 10 times in Phase 2.
  • Mutant Presence is inflicted throughout the whole fight, instead of just Phase 2 and onwards.
  • Mutant no longer heals the player before the desperation attack, and gains an additional attack at the very end. The player now must essentially flawlessly avoid the entire desperation attack in order to win the fight.

First stage

Mutant follows a set pattern, repeating after completing the final attack:

  • Mutant glows blue and maneuvers around the player while aiming The Penetrator at them, its aim telegraphed by a teal beam. It throws it in the direction of the player five times, with each Penetrator leading the player's movement and leaving a trail of Phantasmal Spheres that slowly home in towards the player before exploding.
    • In Masochist Mode, The Penetrator's direction is no longer telegraphed, and fires a deathray alongside the Phantasmal Spheres. Several miniature Destroyers are created at the start of the attack.
  • Mutant slows down and fires several rotating rings of Phantasmal Spheres around it.
    • In Masochist Mode, Mutant creates much more Phantasmal Spheres, and the Phantasmal Spheres travel much faster.
  • Mutant flies up to the corner and swoops down while spawning three miniature True Eyes of Cthulhu. They attack by firing Phantasmal Bolts, Phantasmal Spheres, and a Phantasmal Deathray respectively.
    • In Masochist Mode, six miniature True Eyes of Cthulhu will be created.
  • Mutant maneuvers beneath the player while twirling around The Penetrator, spawning Phantasmal Eyes that home in on the player, and then charges at the player five times after glowing teal as a warning. Each dash leaves behind a homing trail of Phantasmal Spheres.
    • In Masochist Mode, a deathray is also left behind each dash.
  • Mutant stops in place and fires short-ranged Phantasmal Spheres around it in two circular waves. These Phantasmal Spheres emit a warning laser and then fire a miniature Phantasmal Deathray outwards.
    • In Masochist Mode, the warning lasers are no longer fired, and the attack has three circular waves.
  • Mutant immediately follows up the previous attack by fires a four-armed spiral of Phantasmal Eyes.
    • In Masochist Mode, a five-armed spiral is created. The spiral is much faster, forcing the player to dodge between individual eyes instead of following the spiral.
  • Mutant creates a large sword of Phantasmal Spheres and swings it at the player. The Purged debuff is applied to the player for the duration of the attack, disabling dodges.
    • In Masochist Mode, the sword creates an eight-way burst of Moon Blasts that rapidly radiate outwards.

Second stage

Unlike the first phase, Mutant will choose attacks out of the pool below to execute in a randomized order.

  • Mutant fires three circular waves of Phantasmal Deathrays.
  • Mutant twirls the Penetrator, spawning Phantasmal Eyes, and then dashes multiple times. Each dash predicts the player's movement, has its trajectory telegraphed by a warning laser, and produces a lingering Phantasmal Deathray. The final dash leaves explosive trails of Phantasmal Spheres perpendicular to the dash.
    • In Masochist Mode, the warning laser is no longer fired. The Phantasmal Eyes have strong homing and travel faster.
  • Mutant flashes teal and fires a four-armed spiral of Phantasmal Eyes (five-armed in Eternity Mode). The spiral spins faster over time, forcing the player to dodge between individual eyes instead of following the spiral.
    • In Masochist Mode, the attack lasts around twice as long.
  • Mutant creates three clones akin to the Brain of Cthulhu's second phase in Expert Mode. Each Mutant creates a Celestial Pillar and throws it at the player in turn, which explodes into a spread of their respective Lunar Fragments. The bottom two Mutants always attack first, and the arena is completely still during this attack.
    • In Masochist Mode, six Celestial Pillars will be thrown.
  • Mutant summons the Eye of Cthulhu, which rapidly dashes around the player to create an 8-pointed star made of stationary teal sickles. The points of the star then turn yellow and converge on the center of the star, before all of the teal sickles converge as well, leaving the very center as a safe spot.
    • In Masochist Mode, the Eye of Cthulhu will instantly start dashing almost as soon as it spawns.
  • Mutant twirls the Penetrator, spawning Phantasmal Eyes, and then dashes multiple times. The dashes do not lead player movement but produce both a lingering Phantasmal Deathray and a trail of homing Phantasmal Spheres.
    • In Masochist Mode, Mutant will dash much quicker. The Phantasmal Eyes home in and rapidly accelerate towards the player.
  • Mutant spawns five miniature Destroyers that chase the player before leveling the Penetrator at the player and throwing it multiple times. Each attack leads the player's movements, has its trajectory telegraphed by a warning laser, and leaves behind a long Phantasmal Deathray.
    • In Masochist Mode, the warning lasers are no longer fired and the Destroyers are spawned much faster.
  • Mutant flashes red and then rains down a barrage of Skeletron Prime heads beneath itself. After a short delay, Mutant will create a fan of Blazing Deathrays sweeping around itself. The only safe area during this attack is either directly above the Mutant or below him, indicated by a red aura appearing all around them except at the safe spot. The Blazing Deathrays will force the player to move towards the Skeletron Prime heads and will stop before the player makes contact with them. The background will turn dark red for the duration of the attack.
    • In Masochist Mode, Blazing deathrays will also sweep from the opposite direction, forcing the player to the very center of the deathrays.

In Eternity Mode, Mutant additionally gains the following attacks in its attack pool:

  • Mutant spawns 10 Duke Fishrons either above and below the player or to their left and right, which then dash into the player.
    • In Masochist Mode, 14 Duke Fishrons will be spawned instead.
  • Mutant moves under the player and summons the 3 miniature True Eyes of Cthulhu from its first stage.
    • In Masochist Mode, 6 miniature True Eyes of Cthulhu will be spawned.
  • Mutant slows to a halt and creates a short-ranged aura around itself as it tosses a large bomb into the air. The bomb gradually falls and then detonates, completely covering everywhere outside the aura with explosions.
    • In Masochist Mode, the bomb detonates faster.
  • Mutant points Slime Rain at the player while reticles telegraph the rain of slime, with a small gap for the player to safely hide in. This is repeated three times.
    • In Masochist Mode, slime will also ascend from the bottom of the arena. The final Slime Rain's safe zone will slowly move towards the other end of the arena. The background will turn dark blue during the final Slime Rain.
  • Mutant fires an immense amount of Phantasmal Spheres that radiate out in overlapping spiral streams.
    • In Masochist Mode, the attack lasts around twice as long.
  • Mutant circles around the player and repeats the thrown Penetrator attack without leading. Each attack leaves both a trail of homing Phantasmal Spheres and a Phantasmal Deathray.
    • In Masochist Mode, Mutant throws the Penetrators twice as often and can throw twice as many Penetrators.
  • Mutant creates four large rings of Crystal Leaves, much like Plantera in Eternity Mode, while repeatedly throwing Retirangs and Spazmarangs in large arcs, with their trajectories indicated by red and green beams. The rings of Crystal Leaves start spinning and fly at the player after a short delay.
    • In Masochist Mode, five Crystal Leaf rings will be created and are thrown faster. The Retirangs and Spazmarangs are no longer telegraphed.
  • Mutant slows to a halt, and many colored lasers will appear all over the arena, akin to the telegraphs used by the Empress of Light. After a short delay, several Ethereal Lances will sweep the arena, traveling across the previously fired lasers. This attack is repeated five times. After these attacks, a large barrage of Ethereal Lances converge at the player's position. There are two major safe spots, telegraphed by colored lasers appearing everywhere except the safe spots. The background will turn dark purple for the duration of this attack.
    • In Masochist Mode, Ethereal Lances are fired from two sides of the arena, rather than one. The final barrage of Ethereal Lances is much more randomized and occurs at three locations simultaneously.
  • Mutant creates a large sword of Phantasmal Spheres and swings it at the player. The sword creates an eight-way burst of Moon Blasts that rapidly radiate outwards. The Purged debuff is applied to the player for the duration of the attack, disabling dodges.
    • In Masochist Mode, the sword is swung three times, each from a different angle.

Third stage

Upon reaching 1 health in Eternity Mode, Mutant clears all projectiles on the screen and explodes into energy particles that heal the player for ~300 / 0 HP, before becoming invincible and launching a final desperation attack:

  • Mutant flies over the player and fires three / four rapid, dense circular waves of Phantasmal Deathrays.
  • Mutant fires an extremely large amount of spiraling Phantasmal Sphere streams.
  • Mutant fires eight accelerating spirals of Phantasmal Eyes.
  • Mutant emits several rings of Phantasmal Spheres that rotate in opposite directions. As it continues creating the rings, Mutant fires several harmless rays that converge into a supermassive Phantasmal Deathray that tracks the player, sweeping the ray around in a full circle; the deathray will change direction if the player outruns it by too much. The deathray deals massive damage that ramps up over time and ignores immunity frames, almost always instantly killing the player on contact. The background will turn an intense cyan hue for the duration of the attack.
    • In Masochist Mode, a second Phantasmal Deathray will form immediately after the previous one disappears. The second deathray will sweep the arena extremely quickly, forcing the player to rapidly maneuver around the Phantasmal Spheres. Additionally, for the duration of the entire attack, getting hit by any Phantasmal Spheres or the Mutant Seal will inflict Time Frozen for 5 seconds, almost always resulting in the player's death. The background will turn an even brighter shade of bluish-cyan for the duration of the attack.

After completing all of its desperation attacks, all projectiles will vanish. If there are no living players nearby, Mutant will leave and despawn without dropping any rewards. Otherwise, Mutant will explode into a massive ray of light before fading away and reverting back to the Mutant town NPC, dropping its rewards.

Aftermath

  • The Mutant town NPC gains the stats of its boss version and begins to defend itself by throwing The Penetrator at nearby enemies.
  • Screm Painting becomes available by killing the Painter while the Mutant boss is alive.
  • If defeated on Eternity Mode, Masochist Mode is unlocked permanently for all past, present and future worlds.

Notes

  • If the player dies to Mutant's second phase 10 times, summoning it again will prompt the status message "Mutant tires of this charade..." and make it skip directly to its second stage. While the status message only appears on the 11th battle, Mutant will entirely skip its first phase until the player fully defeats it, upon which the counter resets. This does not occur in Masochist Mode, where the player must always complete Mutant's first phase.
  • Mutant will emit a teal glow when using a spear attack that does not lead the player, and will glow blue when using one that does.
  • Mutant is immune to Stardust Enchantment's Time Stop, although it will still affect his projectiles unless he is using his desperation attack.
  • During his last desperation attack, the timer on the attack will not progress if the player is in contact with the Phantasmal Deathray.
  • When Mutant is undergoing a phase transition, the player will be unable to use any items.
  • If the Mutant's Fury is currently active, Mutant will become enraged, increasing its HP to 770,000,000 / 1,155,000,064, multiplying its damage by 17 and its defense by 10, and allowing it to spawn various Eternity Mode bosses.
    • Before 1.3.96.4, Mutant would also enrage if the player had the Calamity Mod installed. However, it only increases its HP to 177,000,000 / 265,500,000, multiplies its damage by 4, and doubles its defense.
  • Currently, If player has the Calamity Mod and Fargo's Souls DLC installed, and the world is in Masochist mode,Mutant will get a hit-counter mechanic (better known as a "Hit Cap") where players could only be hit 21 times until they were killed instantly on the 22th hits, regardless of damage taken.
    • Upon Being killed by the 22-hit cap, a jump scare including a bee and number"2022" occurs, along with a special dying message.
