The Trojan Squirrel is a Pre-Hardmode boss meant to be fought before King Slime. Defeating it will cause the Squirrel NPC to fall out of it if it isn't present in the world already.

Summoning

The Trojan Squirrel does not spawn on its own and must be summoned by the player by using the Squirrel Coat of Arms.png Squirrel Coat of Arms.

Behavior

The trojan squirrel starts the fight by jumping in from off screen before in before initiating it's normal behavior.

The Trojan Squirrel is a grounded boss consisting of three damageable parts, being the Arms, and Body. Destroying the main body will defeat the boss. It uses it's attacks in a fixed cycle.

Some attacks are associated with the Head or Arms, killing a body part will disable attacks associated with cede body part. When the Squirrel cannot use an attack, it will enter a period of downtime, running in a straight line at the target.

  • Both Head and Arms globally increase walk speed by 20% when killed.
  • Killing either the Head or Arms will increase acceleration.
  • Moves slower while using Head or Arm attacks.

Eternity Mode

  • If brought to 50% HP, the main body becomes invulnerable but crippled until both the Arms and Head are destroyed.
  • Acceleration significantly increased.
  • Spends less downtime between attacks, even less while body is crippled.
  • Attacks will become empowered as the Head and Arms are destroyed, or the body is crippled.
  • All movement is 75% slower while body is crippled.

Masochist Mode

  • Running speed significantly increased, always walks the same speed even during attacks.
  • Acceleration is always maxed out.

Attacks

Each of Trojan Squirrel's parts obeys its own attack cycle, only attacking with one part at a time, when another attack is in use the body part will wait for the next open attack opportunity, because of this attack order can be inconsistent.
Generally, attacks in the following order: Acorn Spray, Chains, Squirrel Rain, Acorn Spray, Snowballs, Squirrel Rain, repeating after every cycle, dash attacks vary.

Attack Normal Empowered
Head
Acorn Spray
Fires 4 spreads of acorns at the player
Always uses empowered variant.
Empowered by: Head
Fires 7 volleys of acorns at a much faster rate and velocity.
Acorns move even faster.
Arms
Chains
The boss indicates this attack by ducking several times while playing a loud sound. Fiers 4 chains at the player one by one, alternating hands.
Less windup and chains are electrified causing the whole chain to deal damage rather than just the head.
Always uses empowered variant.
Empowered by: Head
Fires 7 chains at a much faster rate.
Even less windup compared to eternity.
Head
Squirrel Rain
Squirrel projectiles fire from the head in a large arc and in a small area around the boss. The arc of squirrels gradually moves inwards.
Arc moves inward faster. Will additionally use Snowballs in tandem if Arms are alive.
Identical to pervious variant.
Arms
Snowballs
Indicated by a burst of snow particles that fire from the cannon briefly before the attack. Rapidly fires snowballs in a short arc that expands outwards.
Arc moves outward faster.
Identical to previous variant.
Charge Often used in between attacks. Indicates this attack by ducking briefly, becoming more brief as body parts are destroyed. Charges at the player overshooting them leaving large clouds of dust as it runs.
Used much more often.
Empowered by:Head
Releases a trail of Greek Fire from its neck as it runs.
Jump Used at any point the player is above the boss and no other attack is in use. Crouches down and vibrates briefly before leaping at the player, lowers windup as body parts are destroyed. Empowered by: Arms
Creates 4/8 explosions in a row at it's feet with every jump. Also creates explosions when landing.
Empowered by:Arms and Head

Jumps 3 times in a row instead of just once.

Notes

  • Drops a Squirrel Coat of Arms on spawn.
  • Spawns at the position of the Squirrel NPC if one is present.
    • Because of this, Trojan Squirrel will jump across the entire length of any world under the certain conditions.
  • Spawns the Squirrel NPC on defeat if none are present.

Tips

  • Most attacks have obvious indicators.
  • The Boss cannot turn around or attack behind itself while using either Arm attack, leaving an opportunity to damage it from behind.
  • It's best to jump over the empowered jump's explosions, though lack of vertical mobility makes it necessary to jump much earlier, especially on Masochist Mode.

Trivia

  • If Fargo's music mod is active, Nuts and Bolts by ProVGM will play.
  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for Trojan Squirrel: "Built by squirrels, for squirrels! Made of woods collected from numerous lands. It fits a lot more squirrels that it appears"
  • There is an upgraded version of this boss called Champion of Timber.
